Quick Tutorial No. 1
I’ll show you how to navigate the wiki from a few different angles. You can then feel free to use our tour and what you learned as a basis for your own research and have fun exploring as you see fit.
Method 1
Go to Category:Trackage from the main left sidebar. [1]
Choose your subdivision. (We’ll use Halifax as an example) [2]
Read the page if you like but scroll down to the bottom to select the station point you want. I’ll go to Windsor Junction. [3]
Now notice near the top that we have put links to jump to the next station east or west. Below that on the page check out facilities and features section. There’s a bit of variety in the way facilities and features is set up depending on who did it but the info is there for everything we have either gleaned from schedules, documents or photos.
This should give you a good start to researching the D.A.R. on a station by station basis.
Method 2
Go to Structures from the main left sidebar. [4]
On this page are all the structures you are looking for and that are featured on the stations pages under facilities and features but this time organized by type. Choose the type you are looking for, scroll down to the bottom if necessary and choose the structure you are interested in. There are many more structures than we have listed, but we can only list what we have a legitimate reference or image confirming it to.
Water Towers is a good example of this method: [5]
Additional Info 1
Check out the Operations from the left sidebar menu: [6]
You’ll find information on Commerce and Industries, Gravel Pits, Gypsum Trains and other operational subject that have facilities and structures.
Additional Info 2
Check out the Articles from the left side menu: [7]
There might well be some great info here for you in the articles from local newspapers to society news and magazine.
Additional Info 3
If you are looking for a particular location, all named locations are listed in locations: [8]
Important Wiki category note.
There are very few ways you can index a single item multiple time but that is in fact why I chose the wiki software. To see how many times any particular page has been cross categorized go the bottom of the page and you will see all the categories in which this page will be listed in the Categories: bar.
Steam engines for example have been very heavily categorized. Look at the bottom of this page to see what I mean: [9] See the 4 categories to which it belongs?
Important Photos Note.
Again, scrolling to the bottom of any photo, you will see a list of pages in which this photo has been put in a photo gallery on a page as well as categorizations for authorship and ownership. Here’s an example. [10]. Near the bottom under File links you’ll see that pages that this photo appears on and right at the bottom you’ll see the categories the photo belongs to.
With a few nights work, you should be able to find most anything you're looking for and a whole lot more. Of course, if you know of anything that we don’t have listed or find required additions or corrections to existing topics, it would be most appreciated if you would share the information back with the wiki.
