Pereau was the scene of a tragic level crossing accident on July 11, 1935. A speeding 1928 Pontiac with four people inside was hit by the Kentville-bound locomotive No. 39 pulling Train No. 14. The crash was witnessed by James Lightfoot working at the British Canadian Fruit Association Pereau warehouses. He rushed to help the accident victims along with Bert Connors, warehouse manager and other locals.[1] All four victims were taken to the Wolfville hospital by the train. Two died shortly after the accident while two others recovered from seriously injuries. The subsequent investigation blamed careless driving by the unlicensed driver. Bushes and trees of neigbouring properties were also ordered cut back to improve crossing visibility.
