The Grand Pre Fruit Company was a co-operative of several apple farmers in the Grand Pre area. They began meeting in 1911. Initial subscribers included: Henry Chipman, Nathan E. Coldwell, Ayrton Johnson, E. Vernon Gould, Fred A. Palmeter, Joseph A. Allen, J. Everett Palmeter, Jehiel Davison, Guy P. Fuller, Fredrick L. Mitchell, Charles F. A. Patterson, Joseph Allen, Roy W. Woodman, and A. H. Westcott. S. A. Bowser and S. H. Trenholm.[1] In April 1912, the company, officially known as the "Grand Pre Fruit and Packing Company", purchased an older warehouse[2] from W. C. Hamilton.[3] In 1921, the company hired J. H. Hicks & Sons, a building contractor from Bridgetown, to rebuild and extend the 40' x 100' warehouse east of the level crossing at Grand Pre.[4] The reconstructed warehouse was completed in September 1921 and doubled the warehouse size to 40' x 200', as well as shifting it slightly to the south.[5] By 1927, the warehouse could hold 20,000 barrels of apples and the company had taken over a 10,000 barrel warehouse at nearby Horton Landing.[6] The company continued in business until 1978.[7] The warehouse was converted to other uses, including a carpentry shop and dance studio in the 1990s, but was destroyed by fire in 2008.[8]
