Dominion Atlantic Railway Steam Locomotive No. 34 "Gaspereaux"

This locomotive was delivered to the Canadian Pacific Railway on December 23, 1890 as CPR No. 47. It was the beginning of this landmark class of locomotives in Kingston as it was the very first ten wheeler built at the Canadian Locomotive Works. It was renumbered as CPR No. 310 in 1906.

This locomotive became the first of CPR's motive power transferred to the DAR when it arrived in Kentville in November 1910. It became DAR 34 "Gaspereaux", taking over the name earlier used by DAR No. 3 and was formally purchased in November 1911. No. 34 served until July 1923 when it was scrapped in Kentville.

The history of the Kingston Locomotive Works indicates that it had 62" drivers, but The Jim O'Donnell list and Omer Lavallée list say 56" drivers.

Name Origin: River crossed by the DAR at Horton Landing where Acadians boarded deportation ships. Also the name of a popular fish for New England anglers.
