Dominion Atlantic Number 850
Builder: Canada Foundry Company, Toronto
Builder's Number: C70[1]
Weight: 140,000 lbs[2]
DAR number 850 was a large Bucyrus style steam-powered shovel or excavator. The long cab housed the steam engine, coal supply and winches. The large booms and bucket swivelled independently from the front, supported by outrigger legs. The steam shovel often worked the Round Hill Ballast Pit[3] and the Oak Island Ballast Pit. Crew at the Oak Island pit were Reg MacGill and Walter Wood.[4] It appears to have been scrapped after the Second World War, last listed in service in 1944[5] but was gone by 1947.[6]
