Dominion Atlantic Railway Steam Locomotive No. 5, "Benedict"

Built by Portland Locomotive Works, 1875

Or built by Flemming Locomotive Works of Saint John, 1859
- 15" x 22" cylinders

The Jim O'Donnell and Charles McBride Rosters indicate this locomotive began as Windsor and Annapolis Railway locomotive No. 8 "Benedict".(1)
However the McQuinn and Stephens Collection and J.B. King record that it began as Eastern and European Railway No. 10 "Apohaqui", later Intercolonial Railway No. 35. In 1875, it was rebuilt by Flemming with 16" x 24" cylinders and traded to the Windsor & Annapolis Railway where it became W&A No. 5 "Grand Pre", part of a swap of nine standard gauge ICR locomotives for nine broad gauge W&A locomotives in a government plan to standardize gauges.(2)
Name Origins: Father of the heroine Evangeline in the epic poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Later used by DAR locomotives No. 39 (1st) and No. 531.
