Handful of Passengers On Historic Last Trip

Only a handful of passengers were on hand Saturday afternoon when the Dominion Atlantic Railway's “97” made the last run of a locomotive-drawn passenger train from Halifax to Kentville. Beginning today new streamlined diesel “Dayliners” go into service on the Valley route, speeding up travel time by two hours.

Earlier Saturday DAR locomotive trains made their last passenger runs between Halifax and Yarmouth. The mixed passenger-freight train out of Halifax to Kentville Saturday afternoon was the last run under steam. The train was in charge of Conductor Waldo Crosby, Kentville. Veteran train engineer Arthur Ells, Kentville, was at the throttle.

Passengers, shown in pictures above (left) as they boarded the train for the final trip from Halifax are, let to right, Fred Collett and Charlie Waterfield, of Halifax, enroute to the Uniacke area for a fishing trip; Mrs. Edward Dean, Beaverbank housewife returning from a shopping trip to the city. Standing by are Trainman M. W. Alexander and Conductor Waldo Crosby of Kentville. The centre photo shows the train pulling into the Kentville station on schedule. At right the engine and baggage car crew are shown at the end of the run. Left to right they are Albin Gates, Waterville, baggage man; Charlie Goucher, New Minas, fireman; and Arthur Ells, Kentville, engineer.
