Pereau, Nova Scotia

Mile 11.86 Kingsport Subdivision

Pereau was the scene of a tragic level crossing accident on July 11, 1935. A speeding 1928 Pontiac was hit by the Kingsport-bound locomotive No. 39 pulling Train No. 14. The crash was witnessed by James Lightfoot working at the British Canadian Fruit Association Pereau warehouses. He rushed to help the accident victims along with Bert Connors, warehouse manager and other locals.[1] Two passengers in the automobile were killed and two others seriously injured. The injured were taken to Kentville by the train. The subsequent investigation blamed careless driving by the unlicensed driver. Bushes and trees of neigbouring properties were also ordered cut back to improve crossing visibility.
