First Look at Kentville

Post by Paul Charland »

Hi All,

I've been working on another route for a couple of months, the Dominion Atlantic in Nova Scotia. Just completed the headquarters and main yard in Kentville so I thought I'd share a few screenshots.

We'll follow Train 2 as it enters Kentville from the south at the West Main Street crossing:

Image

CPR 9059 passes Canada Foods who took over the DAR roundhouse as a warehouse for bottles and cans after the DAR ended steam operations in the late '50s:

Image

The former machine shop became American Can's warehouse, burning in 1973, the concrete coal tower stood into the '80s:

Heading east through the yard Train 2 passes the Baptist Church and Centennial Arena:

9059 approaches the Kentville station:

Behind 9059 are the DAR shops. With the DAR being isolated from parent company CP Rail, the Kentville shops were responsible for maintaining 2 RDCs, 2 S-3s, and 7 SW1200RSs, any rolling stock that needed attention and it's paint shop was kept busy in the late '60s and '70s applying the new "Action" paint schemes CP Rail adopted:

Image

There were no food services on the RDCs so the station stop was an extended one so passengers and crew could get off the train and grab a drink and a bite.

I'm downloading it now and I hope to have a few minutes later today to run it on my MSTS.

Paul, you have started what I hope will be an example to all the historic societies in the Valley. For me this is a dream realized to see the DAR alive again through the magic of MSTS.

I shall in fact be sending this link to our freinds in all the historic soceities to come take a look at what is happening here.

Thank you my friend!!

Hi Steve and All,

I do see this as a bit of historical preservation, some of what I've drawn just doesn't exist anymore. Can't claim this to be 100% accurate, I just don't have that kind of information to work from.

As with the FJ&G and Springfield Terminal routes I've had people thank me for them being able to show their kids what "use to be". Maybe some day someone will be able to show their kids that the Valley had their own railway, your version as well.

Started the S-3s this morning, going to create the two DAR units as well as CP 6591 that I helped preserve for the Smiths Falls Railway Museum... still runs too!

Has anyone tried doing this route with TRAINZ by AURAN? I am wondering if that is also possible. I don't have the ability myself to create the required objects. Brian

Hi Brian,

No, if someone did they never mentioned it in any public forum.

Maybe I'll have to learn how if I can find the time. By the way I just purchased MSTS on e-bay just so I can run this route. :D

I thought I'd added Mike to the beta list, but that's corrected now.

ANYONE who would like to be added to the list and access to the current beta can send me a personal message with their address and I'd be glad to add their name to the list. The more eyes looking at what I've done might mean the more errors that get caught and corrected.

It's been a crazy last 2 weeks but I finally got my game machine back under my desk and hooked up and I finally got a few hours tonight to load up the route and play with it. I went from Coldbrook to Aldershot and then on to Grand Pre, but I have to say Paul you've out done yourself this time on Kentville. When I get another chance I'll U/L some screen shots. I see some activity that would indicate you're thinking about filling in Aldershot, New Minas and Wolfville next!

Comments:
Can you put some (7) yard cams in for those who don't run that yard cam utility?
If in fact you did then my (7) key isn't kicking me into yard cam view.

I have just about all the rolling stock already installed to try the activities EXCEPT that I renamed it all so now I have to reload the original packages with the original names to try out the activities, which I'm looking forward to next.

Bravo Paul!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Steve,

Getting a little burned out right now, but still 'on the job'. Must say I've been a bit disappointed by the low interest in the project for this community. On top of that out of nine people who have downloaded the beta one two have sent any feedback. Spent four months on Kentville, was hoping it would have generated a bit more interest then it has.

Working on a set of cabeese right now in script and multi-mark schemes.

I'll have to check into camera seven, never used it before so I'm not sure how to install them.

Paul:
I have another topic started:
http://www.dardpi.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=132
in which I put some screen shots of me playing around on the Beta 2. I had fun with the "what if" shots of my favourite equipment and consists on the DAR.

I know that you need feeback to validate what you've done. I also know however that with 9 downloads there are still folks who visit and read regularly that haven't even joined the forum yet.

I also think that this should be uploaded to the Train-Sim community asking for comments to be placed here on this forum because there will be a lot of peole there who have interest in the DAR and would love to try it but who have yet to discover that DAR DPI exists. Just look at the DL count for your S3s (189 already) or my 9059 repaint (514).

I left the forums open to the public in hope that folks who were able to read would join up and join in.

So now I'm addressing these fine people on your behalf. If you have downloaded the route please please please join up and add your comments to this thread or create a new message.. whatever.. but please let us know that you think Paul's work is stellar and give the author a litlle encouragement here.

I haven't been following the MSTS post until looking it over tonight. The screen shots are amazing! I have intentions of installing the DAR MSTS, but need to reinstall Windows first. Very well done, guys. I am looking forward to running a train on the virtual DAR.
