Massive DAR Photo Collection

Post by Paul Charland »

Hi All,

A good friend just stumbled on this 494 photo collection of the Dominion Atlantic at the Canadian Science and Technology Museum. A quick run through the pages shows mostly roster shots starting from early steam to the delivery of the SW1200RSs.

Thanks for alerting us Paul. I know this collection from visits to Ottawa over the years but never knew it had gone online. Must have happened recently. It is great to see all those images now at our fingertips and some photos have been added since I went through it taking notes. The collection is mostly a combination of donations/purchases of a number of private collectors: Norrell, Stephens etc plus some CPR images. I imagine we will all spot a few of the errors - like the Halifax and Southwestern roundhouses identified as DAR, but there is great stuff here.

This is pretty fanstastic. Should make for many interesting discoveries, confirmations and cross references. Thanks for the heads up Paul.

Hi Steve,

I'll pass along a thinks to Steve Hunter for the find, I've checked off and on over the years and never found this, must have gone on line pretty recently.

I would think so too as I take a gander from time to time and it would have been pretty unthinkable to miss a collection of this size. Thanks are certainly in order.

Call me what you like, and you probably should, but I wasn't much interested in all the photos of locos. :)

I was most interested in rolling stock and the few scenes there were. What I mean, is that pictures of locos don't give you a good view of what was going on. :-)

That said, what am I looking at here? Do I see a wood frame truck? http://www.images.technomuses.ca/search ... 88&lang=en

Hi Mike,

The wooden truck is from the caboose on the same page.

I too was hoping for more then just tight roster shots, would have liked to see what you could see in the background... but, none the less this appears to be a complete roster from the beginning to the end of steam.

Those locomotive shots do get bit repetitive - I found myself staring more at the background edges of some of them - but there are some gems in there including the only shot I have ever seen of the Kingsport engine house, and this one is a rare North Mountain Line shot in Weston: http://www.images.technomuses.ca/search ... 77&lang=en

These are gems but some are very special like this Weston shot AND a confirmation shot of No, 16, the best shot we have really seen of it too I might add.

Dan!!! Compare the two shots and you can see they were shot in sequence so the one we have is at Weston too!!

http://www.images.technomuses.ca/search ... 77&lang=en

We can even tell which one was taken first and how how time between the shots passed because of the movement of the shadow of the pole. Too much!

By the way, if you're dying for more rolling stock and broader subject range keep an eye of the stuff I'm slowly adding to my collection because I like that kind of stuff too. Did you catch the old coaches and the pit crane (No. 3)
http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... -B0015.jpg
that I added last week? There's a lot more like that coming as I get them scanned. Look at my collection and see:
http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... Collection

Once you see No. 3 in fact you might even think that it could be modelled. Jim Taylor did a pile driver that in fact could be easily turned into this crane:
http://home.xcountry.tv/~kestrel/id61.htm

Keep your eyes open for old family photos and stuff too that might have been shot on a train or in and around train facilities. I often look through Photobucket and the like looking for gems in family photos and have found a few from time to time and added the links into the wiki for all to discover.

Loved seeing the North Mountain shots! I'm dying to see more along the Weston and Kingsport branches. :-)

This is a reminder to all of us to record everything we can about a railway, and not just the cool train bits. :-)

Well Mike isn't that the truth and hats off to you for such a terrific job doing exactly that by creating a historical record of not just all the remaining but all the known apple warehouses in the eastern Annapolis Valley area!

Fact be known, your site has turned into a photographic historical record of ALL the remaining structures from the bygone Weston/Kingsport branch of the DAR.

If you have never seen Mike's amazing site AND accompanying Google map locating all the structures, please follow these two links:

Nice work comparing those No. 16 Weston shots Steve. So strange to see that long ago shadow captured on its march across the platform.
I certainly enjoyed the crane No. 3 shot. As it happens I am slowly scratchbuilding that very unit. My HO Kentville yard is pre coal tower so I need something to help load coal.

The way I have it figured is that the engine is turned facing east early to mid-morning by the shadows on the building and being that the shadow is so long and that the engineer's face is so illuminated. The first shot is the one on our site followed by the shot on the external site according to the movement of the shadows by the platform.

Anyone else differ on the detective work? Sing out!
