Re: DAR merchandise
Logo history can be quite interesting. From what I can see, you've re-drawn the Evangeline that was used on printed material, although you have changed the Dominion Atlantic Railway it to the one you saw on the inspection car, which is pretty unique actually after spending a few hours today sifting through photos. Notice too that on paper Evangeline always faces left.
The actual tender logo is here:
http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... d_8-56.jpg
Notice that the Dominion Atlantic Railway and The Land Of Evangeline are set in serif type and the "railway" is a smaller font size. This is for the most part what I see on from the 30's on to the end of steam.
http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... R0555b.jpg
http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... R0556b.jpg
http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... 1046fg.jpg
http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... R1046h.jpg
Notice that generally, Evangeline faced forward on the tender crest. That would meant that she was facing right when on the right side of the tender and facing left when on the left side of the tender. But not always!
So from the thirties right until the end this is pretty well the tender crest used. I can clean this up fairly quick. Right now its at 3000 pixels in height so by the time it's back down to 600, it will look absolutely perfect on a cup.
So which logo does everyone think we should use?

Re: DAR merchandise
Hi Steve,
Hadn't notice Evangeline facing forward on both sides of the older engines, nice catch!
Steam or inspection would be fine by me, although I'd suspect steam would be more common a choice. You mentioned the other day about what else to put on a mug, could put www.dardpi.ca along the bottom, opposite side from the herald maybe.

Make sure whoever prints the mugs uses dishwasher safe ink, have a Greenwood Military Aviation Museum mug that started loosing ink after the third washing and is now an expensive white mug!

Re: DAR merchandise
Wow! This discussion has really taken off!
I'm partial to either of the vintage logos. Good eye Steve, for picking up Evangeline facing both left and right. I did not notice that before.
I think a black mug with yellow or gold lettering would be sharp. I would also like a vanity plate. I agree with Paul on having the website URL opposite the logo. I would also like it on the plate.
As to logo ownership, it may be a good idea to check with CP. However, they may want to charge an outrageous fee. So in that case, if we don't contact them, they will probably never know or care. Besides, they are busy making money out west moving freight, not selling merchandise.

I remember pointing this out to Don Foster many moons ago. He was under the impression that there had only been one stencil for both sides and he hinted he knew where it was but then when he realized there was second, he wondered where the second one was.Paul Charland wrote:Hi Steve,

Can I have a count of how many people want these cups and how many of them each person will take just as a start.

Re: DAR merchandise
I was thinking perhaps the Memory Lane Museum logo could be on the mugs as well. OR, that could be a project for them.
I'll take two mugs.

Re: DAR merchandise
For sure it will have to say Memory Lane Railway Museum on it. I'm going to mess with that and come up with something like lettering in an arc like on some railway's old tenders.
I'd like to see these mugs come in at a good enough price that we can still sell them for under $15 each. That's my goal.
PS, Here's a good shot of Evangeline looking the other way:

Re: DAR merchandise
Are all proceeds going to the Middleton Railway Museum? Any project in particular?.. If that's the case I would be willing to order one or two..
Let me know if you'd like to advertise this project in "Canadian Railway Modeler" and the soon to be released "Railfan Canada" (prototype) magazines as I know the publishers personally -they're in the model railway club out here in Winnipeg...
Did anyone here ever buy a Windsor and Hantsport Railway mug when they were running the "Evangeline Express?" Their mugs were dark blue (navy) with gold Evangeline logos -although Evangeline's image was modified to look like she was an Aboriginal (long hair with a feather) and Minas Basin/Blomidon was also in the image. Modifying the image, I think, was their way of combating any copywrite issues. I also have a DAR ball cap with this modified image.
Someone in the Valley back in the 1990s created this image and used it on a number of clothing items, including the above mentioned ball caps along with t-shirts. They were, at one time, sold by the Middleton Railway Museum..
A Canadian company (Puce Creek Central from what I've been told) makes 12"X11" plastic railway herald signs of virtually every railway. I bought a DAR sign a year ago at Duane's H&SW museum in Lunenburg. The sign is black with the white Evangeline logo -the Evangeline on this sign is the proper Acadian figure with the shoulder long hair -like on the loco tenders... I thought it'd be nice to see the exact same creation only with the proper maroon background and gold or yellow image as would have been found on the locos painted maroon. Perhaps this could be another project to take on -to make a similar sign in maroon and gold...
Maybe a properly done True Line Trains DAR van, or some other prototypical piece of scale rolling stock/locomotive could also be offered... I'm sure Jason Shron at Rapido Trains would entertain such an idea with his passenger equipment. I may be able to find an inroad there...

Re: DAR merchandise
I'm bumping this topic by bringing the subject up again. There still some work to do and decisions to be made.
The way I understand it, we have decided to use the DAR tender herald so familiar to all and have it printed in gold on a Tuscan mug.
On the other side of the cup, as this IS a fundraiser for the museum, will go the museum's name set in Dominion Atlantic font in an old style arc like on turn of the century tenders like No. 6:
http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... R0006a.jpg
with the museum's address, phone number and the web site on it.
Here's my thoughts on actually producing it.
* As it is a fundraiser for the museum, I hate to see them pay for it.
* There are many cheap mugs makers but the biggest part of the cost is the shipping.
* Therefore, a local NS mug maker would be more pratical.
Does anyone know of a good quality mug printer in the maritimes where we could get some quotes?

Re: DAR merchandise
Just thought I'd chime in here. My son is a graphic designer for Daquin Sales here in Ottawa. They can do up any promotional items you would like and I am sure I can negotiate a very good price for all of us. All I will need is a sample of the finalized logo and an approximate number of units. They do screen printing and embroidery on site. Some of their clients are Hooters, Jellystone Campgrounds and the RCMP. Feel free to check out their website. Brian Lilly in Ottawa.

Re: DAR merchandise
Hmm.. have you got a web site link? Would they have prices and samples on-line?
Tee Shirts and Coffee mugs with the single colour logo seem to be the most desirable and sellable item so next I guess we'll have to decide on a quantity.
