Windsor Help Needed

Post by Paul Charland »

Hi All,

Anyone have a track plan or diagram (even a scan of a sketch would help) of Windsor before the causeway went in? There are several photos in the wiki but it doesn't look like enough to piece a yard diagram together.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Paul,

If you come up empty handed, consider getting a paper map from Service NS. http://www.novascotia.ca/sns/access/land.asp

I've been meaning to go there myself, as there are several aerial photos I'd like to have.

Hi Matt,

I think I've got it figured out through photos from the Wiki. I finally came across a photo clearly showing the south end of the yard in front of the station that shows how the switches were laid. I'd been looking through the yard photos and this one turned up in the station folder.

What photo was that? I've had issues trying to make a copy of the Windsor Yard prior to the cause way going in

This shot is in the Freight Shed folder, think it might help to have a copy in the Yard folder as well.

Another helpful shot that turned up on the Freightshed folder shows the road on the south side of the freightshed that crosses the siding heading to the warehouse were the modern station sits. This is the one and only crossing to the west part of Windsor and the textile mill.

That is a good shot of the start of the yard. Added a copy to the train yard page.

Thanks Dan,

Should help anyone who's going to model the yard. I finished it yesterday and did a test run in the evening. I'll take a screen shot of the trackplan a little later and post it, I still have a question but thing I did get it right.

OK, here's what I have for a trackplan from the photos in the library. I do have a couple of questions though.
WindsorTrack.jpg
First is about a crossover that does not show in any of the photos but... in this shot train 96 departing to Halifax sure looks like it's crossing over to me:

http://dardpi.ca/wiki/images/Train_No._ ... r_1949.jpg

Second question, in the background of this shot there is a dark blue long low building that is near the location of the later Windsor Station. Photos clearly show this building had a siding on the west side, but this photo shows three evenly spaced loading doors on the east side making me think there might have been a siding along this wall, but I can't find a siding in any other photos.

Any thoughts?

I think you did a good job based on what you could find for images.

I'd put the cross over in as it seems to make sense.

Hi Samuel,

The crossover does make sense to me too but there is a crossover just north of the location I have marked so maybe not needed. I think they operated Windsor so Halifax trains used the track right in front of the station and Truro trains used the second track (but then that doesn't explain why the shot of the mixed is using the Truro track unless he just picked a car up at the freight shed and was going to use the crossover north of the water tank).

I did do a minor adjustment yesterday, moved the first switch to the station train into the curve (using a curved switch) and moved the switch to the two stub end station tracks further back.

I'm in way late on this one Paul but this is a heck of a good shot. It's a photo that hasn't been linked in yet but it is on the wiki:

Wow, not seen that one before. Anyone know what the three striped boxes are? Do they house fuel pumps or something?
