DAR Rails to Trails - need help with survey

Post by Dan Conlin »

A plan to develop the old DAR roadbed from Grand Pre to Annapolis Royal is gathering steam:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scot ... -1.2857150

Sure we'd all love to see trains still running on it but as times have changed its good that the line stays public and it is a chance to remind people of the great contribution of the DAR in building so much of Western Nova Scotia. There is an online survey to gather input for ideas and themes for the trail:
https://upland.typeform.com/to/aBynoa

Please have a go at filling out the survey. They want lots of input. We may assume that everyone out there will recognizes the importance of the railway but there are lots of competing themes out there and the railway heritage of the old DAR right of way be be overlooked without your input.

Survey filled out though I had an issue with it loading in IE worked fine in Firefox (in case anyone else has an issue).

That would be a pretty sweet bike ride, being able to go from Grand Pre to Annapolis Royal, I if I get back into my former cycling shape I could easier do that one way in a day, or possibly there and half way back as when I was in my top cycling form I could do 150km in a day no problem.

Though with the line being pretty level, someone in good cycling form for long distance could be able to do the 230km around trip in a day!

Thanks Samuel! Are you on the Atlantic Rails yahoo group as well. Would you be able to cross post a note about the survey there? I am trying to reactivate my Atlantic Rails account which was tied to the email from my old job but can't seem to get past the waves of Yahoo security barriers.

I did it too. Sort of a weird survey though. Would be interested to see the results and the conclusions drawn from it.

Some very strange questions for a survey about a trail, you'd think the tourist board was looking for ideas for their next advertisement!

Sorry I don't have a Yahoo Account use to have one long time ago for junk mail and things like that but I forget the login credentials. Though I did post the information onto the Atlantic Rail Facebook page.

Cheers

One of the people helping with the trail asked me for name suggestions, something catchy and marketable that also reflects railway heritage. Anyone have suggestions?

These were the ones that came to mind which I shared:
Land of Evangeline Route – the DAR’s official motto, combines railway and Acadian heritage
Flying Bluenose – the railway’s flagship luxury train from 1893 to 1936
Flying Acadian – an earlier version of the same train in the 1880s
Maybe a name that uses the names of some of their long-serving locomotives like Glooscap or Blomidon.

The DAR put a lot of resources into marketing and publications. Maybe there are some other catchy phrases in there?

The "Dominion Atlantic Trail"

or the "Evangeline Route"... I have a graphic in mind for the little trail signs.. it kind of looks like a woman looking over her shoulder!

OK, here's my suggestion:

I love it Paul. Be great to see Evangeline leading people down the line again. I'll share with the one person I know on the committee. I doubt they'll go for it. Not everyone is as keen on the railway connection as we are.

Don't tell them I live in Ontario... just tell them I took Graphic Communications in Kentville back when it was still the Kings County Regional Vocational School!

I'll vote for that one Paul! Nice job!!

Why do you think the link to railway history is so repressed in Nova Scotia? I've never understood it even though this site is all about recognizing it and trying to combat it.

I was hopeful that rail service might return to New Minas, but once a trail is in place, it is doubtful it would ever happen.
