Maritime Federation of Model Railroaders annual show

Post by downeastrailfan »

The annual model railroad show rotates around the Maritimes, and this year, it is being held in Wolfville. This would be a great opportunity for those of us involved with the site to book a table and showcase the dardpi and hswdpi. A lot of folks out there are still not aware of both sites. I spread the word whenever I have an opportunity. Might be a way to make contacts and get new material and volunteers as well. I would be willing to take a shift for a few hours, and I would appreciate the chance to get away from the table and look around the show. Is anyone interested in helping out? There is a cost for table rental as well.

Here are the show details: http://mfmr.ca/2014/06/convention-2015- ... m-special/

Hi All,

Maybe someone with a laptop could take my MSTS DAR route and have a train running from Annapolis Royal to Windsor Junction. My half completed Conn River route is currently at the Springfield MA show.

Great idea. I'd be happy to take some shifts at the table and chip in for the table fee. (In some past conventions they only charged for sales tables.)

I think I may also be giving the banquet talk, kind of forgot that I volunteered to do it two years ago. I'd be doing a DAR power point slide and plan to promote the DAR-DPI there with a some slides.

Wow. Thanks guys. Those would be some great things to do to find more DAR fans.

Anything I can do from afar?

Hi Paul,

I tried to get your game installed a few years ago, but I'm not computer literate enough for that. Hopefully someone else can do that. If not, we can show screen shots.

Hopefully we'll meet some retired DAR railroaders at the show.

Do you have the two CDs for MSTS... and what version of Windows do you have?

There are instructions for laptops that are a little different then a desktop computer.

There is now a program called Open Rails that works much better then the old MSTS. It's free and the only thing that's missing from it at this time is a route editor... they are starting to work on that. It has a much further viewing distance, when I was doing Greenwood MSTS could barely see from the steam plant to the tower but no further then that, OR could see the other side of the base including the tree line about half a mile away from the tower.

Anyway, if you want to give it another try and need help, let me know.

Only have so much vacation time every year now that I'm full time employed and it;s already spoken for this year! Don't get me wrong, I AM dying to get down there but sorry.. not this year!

I would put in a word that the Open Rails is your best solution for Windows 7 wide screen running of Paul's DAR route. If you set up two computer you can even network them and run on the same layout simultaneously. Very smooth running and high performance program that renders beautifully. There still are some detail differences missing on OR they haven't properly reverse engineered but those are few and far between and normally require a trained eye to see.

As far as getting the computer setup though, we can do that from afar. Let's get Paul and you setup with Teamviewer so he can remote in and set up your computer.

That's the least we can do from afar.

Hi Dan and Steve,

OK, I might be able to help but I have never installed MSTS on a laptop and that might have issues I have no experience with.

I don't know what operating system Dan's using.

Are we skipping MSTS and going straight to Open Rails?

If so you'll need to go to:

http://openrails.org/

Go to the download>program page and down load the installer.

You can run MSTS routes and equipment on OR without having MSTS installed but... When routes and equipment are/were created for MSTS they often use common sound and other minor files found in MSTS that are not found in OR, therefore you would be able to run a train in OR without having MSTS installed but you would not hear common sounds like freight car general noises sort of thing.

I'm running OR X2319 still, it's stable and I'm spending most of my time creating a route and not a lot of time "playing", so I haven't updated OR in months. It's still experimental, and there may be bugs but fewer and fewer as time goes by.

Might be an idea if Dan says what operating system he has on the laptop and what happened last time he tried installing MSTS on it... that would be the place to start.

It's Matt here, not Dan.

I'm running Windows 7.

Last time I tried to get the DAR simulator working, I was using a laptop running Windows XP. This is a much newer machine.

I'll have to get Microsoft Train Sim back from Samuel before we can proceed.

Yes... as soon as I hit the send button I thought... why'd I call Matt Don!

OK, Matt, the show isn't until the middle of May, so there's plenty of time.

Any chance the Old Orchard Inn would have a large TV that you could use and hook the laptop up to... maybe you could e-mail them and ask.

It should only take a day or two to get you running, might take another day to download all the rolling stock. Are you on high speed or dial-up? You can download the DARv2 and start downloading the rolling stock even before you have MSTS and OR installed.
