Modern use of Dominion Atlantic

Post by DARMIDLAND »

As we know the DAR always wanted to be distinct for the CPR. As I was going through the collection I found 2 items marked for the DAR in the packman era. How many more things were marked this way in the modern times? See pictures.

That is very interesting Andrew. I've never seen the Pacman and the DAR together before although I suppose "why not". Too bad they didn't letter a few diesels like that!

Back when I was a lad heading to the Kentville Vocational School I noticed one of the ex-work diners in the auxiliary track was in the common boxcar red but had a yellow CP Rail and multi-mark... never seen any like that again.

Neat stuff! Hopefully you can provide scans sometime, as it is impossible to read. Is that your father's correspondence?

My father wrote at the time to see if we could obtain a copy of the History of Dominion Atlantic. This was the response from the office in Kentville. They put us on to the CPR archives in Montreal but they did not have any copies. One was given to us a year or two later. Will scan,to easy to take photo with iPad.

That was about the same time I was hunting for a copy too. Interestingly enough I ended up finding a copy on an inter-library loan and lo and behold, it came from the University of Alberta library. I photocopied the whole thing before I returned it. That was the start of my appetite for the D.A.R. At the time there was really nothing and only a passing mention of the existence of it in any regular history of the C.P.R.

The graphic logo on the bill of lading got me thinking. For my fantasy DAR (either real life/model railway/simulator) I had been toying with the idea of lettering an SW1200RS "DOMINION ATLANTIC" in block lettering with the maroon and grey scheme. However, the multi mark logo with a CP Rail slanted font lettered "DOMINION ATLANTIC" in action red would look REALLY cool!

Does anyone want to tackle this gif with my idea? I have no idea how to do it. http://trainiax.net/drawings/55-emd/sw/ ... 0rs-cp.GIF

Now that I see it again, do you mean take the CP RAIL off and replace it with DOMINION ATLANTIC right?

There was a thread on Trainsim one Friday about "what if" schemes. It took me twenty minutes to put this "what if..." the province took over the DAR after the 99 year lease was up:

Here's 8132 using the same size font as the CP Rail... had to stack it to make it fit:

Here's the lettering not stacked and the size reduced... kind of like this version better:

I see you rose to the challenge Paul. Much appreciated! Nice job too.

I think I like the larger type stacked.

I remember the NS Blue locos from a while back. Did you ever play with the same blue, yellow and green as the NS tartan?

Hi Steve,

I did try the numbers in red with a yellow pinstripe outline but didn't like it and replaced them with the blue numbers.

Just wondered. I like how you maple leafed the edge of the rad and "waved" the line along the body. Maybe a conceptual like this sent to the right people might now save the CBNS from the same fate as the DAR and HSW. Another sad chapter in NS Railways about to close.

I've been thinking about applying this scheme to a chopped nose GP-9 or RS-18. Don't forget the blue nose on the "bluenosers"!
