Scanning Memory Lane Collection - Road trip part two

Post by SamuelMClark »

On the 10th of May Matt and I are planning to go to Middleton to scan more of their collection, I'm going to be working on scanning their slide collection and Matt will be working on other documents/photo's if anyone else wants to come help out is welcome to join in and help. Best to have a laptop and a scanner. There's not much room for setting up so maybe two other people with laptops and scanner would be max, or if you just want to come and help out go though documents and photo's that would be great.

I will be calling the museum on the 1st when they open to let them know that I'm coming back up to scan more of their collection. And I'll be giving them a binder of some of the documents I got from Bev since I have two boxes wroth, and I'm going to see about giving them a copy of my 1905 2'x2' times table for use at the station.

Wish you could come too Steve.

I just called Memory Lane, and informed them of our visit. So they are open from 10:00 - 15:00 on Saturday so it will be rather a busy day scanning.

Also I got my 1905 times table printed out on plastic corrugated board so they can either display it inside or outside on the station. (I still need to do some digital editing of that photo so some words are restored for easier reading).

Got three cases of slides scanned though apparently I was informed that most of Mannings slides are of other railways in Canada or the US. Though I didn't look at them as I was more interested in scanning the ones that were DAR. Most of those slides are from the mid to late 70's. There are dates on the slides though I wasn't sure if it was the date of the photo or the date it was made. Most of the slides are from Kentville with a few good ones from the turntable and from inside the engine shed, a few others are of Yarmouth and Weymouth. And couple bonus slides for HSW of Tusket Station.

Some photo's that I'd like a second opinion on for numbering and where they should go which include random rolling stock in the Kentville Yard.

This one should go under baggage though I'm not fully able to tell of it's number on the side which I believe to be 40499

Coal Tender though not sure from what Steam Engine

Not sure if this is a sleeper, dinner or coach (405801)

Photo 1 - Have you got a higher res original to send me? That one number could be 0, 3 or 5
Photo 2, same question - the back of the tender has a number to trace it but can't make out more than it starts with 4
You can always look up any number up in the MP14 Books: http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... :MP14FORMS
Photo 4, I vote for Windsor
Photo 5 & 6 definitely Kentville.

I'll see if I have time later to locate 405801.

The files I've uploaded where the original files I made from the scans, though if need be the next time I'm up in Middleton to scan more things, I'll see about trying to make larger resolution scans of them.

And the one of the Tender that's the closed photo I have of it. Though there are a few other photos that has the Tender in it but they are wider angle shots.

Though I think most shots are of the Kentville area as most seems to be of either Kentville minus the few that's Yarmouth & Weymouth! But you could be right there is something about it that makes it feel like it's Windsor.

Yea.. I would say for archival purposes that 8x10s at 600, anything smaller at 1200, really small and negatives at 2400. That's what I do anyway.

One of these days JGP2000 is finally going to come into it's own and then these wonderful high res images can finally be shown to their full quality.

The time to scan it vs. the miniscule cost of storage really precludes that the higher you can go the better it is.

I still have some of those track blueprints I scanned at 300 DPI - they we 36" high x 15 feet long!! They got so big that I have not been able to edit them yet. No program I know of yet can handle 18,000 pixels but one day.....
