Rails to Trails & W&H West of Hantsport

Post by SamuelMClark »

Well the old rail line in behind New Minas has been converted to a walking trail as there is a nice newly paved trail along the old rail line found that out there Wednesday evening.

Noticed that more and more of the Rail line West of Hantsport is being ripped up. The rail crossing in Greenwich going over to Port Williams has been removed all the track has been toss up on the East side of the road. Plus the rail crossing at the Grande Pre park has been removed and toss to the East side of the road. And in Wolfville the track not surprising is fully over grown but where there was some private crossings into back fields that's been ripped up and concrete blocks install for part of something for the university.

On the bight side there's Paul's Virtual layout of the DAR! Cheers Paul, I'll have to get that up and running in my Microsoft Train Simulator.

Thanks for the updates Samuel. It seems there's nothing we can do these days apart from continuing to keep the D.A.R. alive through our combined efforts here.

So yesterday when I went over to Bev's place to pick up those boxes of Tariffs, I stopped in Mantua to finish getting some additional photos as something caught my eye in the aerial view of Google Maps there is another spur that leaves the yard and heads over towards the main buildings, this could possible be for taking their small 45 tonner engine into their shop for repairs or housing it when not in use. (see attached photo spur moving to the left)

Though on my way back to my car I was stopped by their security asking me what I was doing, informed him that I was taking pictures of the rail yard so I could finish making my plans for the layout. And informed him that I was a rail buff and was documenting the yard so that some day when it's gone we'll have a record. Though that day might be coming sooner than we expect from the way he was talking they plan on ripping up all the track in the yard there maybe in a year or two not entirely sure, I should have asked more questions but once he knew I wasn't up to no good he left.

Though one thing I found this time when I was walking into the Mantua Yard there was a small pile of Gypsum poured onto the tracks I don't recall seeing it last time I was there walking, they might have done that to help discourage people from walking into the area.

So the first rail crossing just after the Gaspereau River on the West bank has been ripped up and toss to the West side Wharf Rd.

While I was at Bev's place we were talking about the line and he mentioned that he heard someone say that someone was up on the Halifax Sub some where's between Ellershouse and Windsor with the pickup truck on the tracks inspecting the line into Windsor. I'd like to think it might have been CN but I'm hoping it was Windsor & Hantsport making sure it's still some what good for doing the Thomas Tank Engine tourist train.

Also I stopped in Kentville to picked up some aerial photo's that has parts of the Kentville Yard from the late 70's, they are impressive to see and sad at the same time as when you look at Kentville now there is no evidence really left to say that Kentville was the centre of the DAR. Those there is this nice painting someone done on the old Cleve's Sporting Goods Store (see attached)

Does any one know what the scape value of the line West of Hantsport might be? I have a feeling it might cost more to go in and manually remove it than it would be to just leave it abandon!
