canopy on the Kentville station

Post by theshirecollector »

Can anybody tell me when this addition to the eastern end of the station was added and also when it was removed. Thanks for any info or leads to the answer.

The Kentville station's platform awnings were built in 1904 as part of the expansion of the station designed by Herbert Gates. A study of all those great station photos on our Kentville Station page
( http://dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Kentville_Station ) shows the eastern platform awning was removed about 1968. The Western end had been taken down about 1958.

Just out of curiosity, what made you ask? Thinking of a model?

Oh no no, not a model! I'm just interested in the history of the town of Kentville. Knowledge is wealth to me.

The town is very indebted to the railway company for its prosperity. In fact the company was and still is quite a source of interest all over Americana.

Another question, if you don't mind, any chance you know how long the main station was in feet or meters? Thanks for your helping info.

We had quite the discussion about many of the Kentville facilities including the station dimensions on this message thread:
http://www.dardpi.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=18

As well, on the Kentville station page, each renovation of the station has the dimensions mentioned:

Enjoy the read!

I think the dimensions for the Kentville Station at its zenith were 185 feet plus 100 feet of platform awning to the east and 60 feet of awning to the west.
"Knowledge is wealth". I like that. I just wish there were more people in Kentville who recognized the importance of the DAR. With the exception of the folks at the Kings County Museum, the town has gone out of its way to erase as many traces of the line as possible.

Wouldn't we all love to know what number that engine is?!! Might stand a chance at really high resolution of seeing it.

Yeah. I'd love to be able to make out that number plate. Next time I am in Ottawa, I'll call up the original when I am at Library and Archives Canada. (Some people go to Ottawa to see Senator games, I go to use the archives!)
