Winter on the DAR
Resting from shoveling Saturday morning after a good old fashioned heavy snowfall I amused myself by pulling together some fine DAR winter images on this page: http://dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Winter
I am sure I missed a few nice ice and snow shots that people have uploaded so please tag any ones that you know about.

Hi Dan,
Great set of shots, thanks!
What's the story behind the RS-18u being used? Was it on the line for any length of time, just testing, or what?

That is nice, might have to actually think about doing a winter scene somewhere on my future layout!

Re: Winter on the DAR
Hi Paul.
Apparently the RS18u's were brought on the D.A.R. in Ballast service in 1985 and 1986. That's the info we have on http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... gory:RS18u
There's more details and photos on every locomotive engine number page with references.
And thanks for the great winter shot gallery idea Dan! It isn't the first time that the topic of D.A.R. winter shots have come up but it is a great idea to highlight them as a gallery!

Lovely image. Great snowy trees. Where is the location? Just west of Kentville?

Hi Dan,
It's just behind the fire hall at Mount Uniacke.

Re: Winter on the DAR
V. 1 of Gary Ness' book indicates the RS-18u's were brought in for ballast trains, but Ron Haight photographed them photographed them on freights as well. I was pretty thrilled when I found these pics, as it provides another locomotive to add to a model railroad/simulator for freight trains, not just ballast trains.

Re: Winter on the DAR
Agreed. Those are great photos and oh so rare. I'm sure you could win a bet on those ones as most people didn't know they ever ran them and if they did, they think it was all ballast service.
Maybe one day more photos from another railway fan as avid as Ron will be found that shows them on other parts of the line in freight operation. We can always hope!
In the meantime, who's got the best RS-18s and in what scale?

Trueline Trains has an RS-18u and if it's anything line the quality of some of their earlier offerings, it's better then brass.
I'll have to download the set of RS-18, 18u's and renumber a few.

Re: Winter on the DAR
Will Lawrence claims that the TLT RS-18's dimensions are off. He said the hood is too short, and the frame too tall if one is next to an Atlas RS-11. A chop nosed conversion is available: http://www.prototypemodelindustries.com ... m2_003.htm
TLT cancelled the RS-18u.
Overland produced the RS-18 in brass. David Nadeau had an O scale one for sale two years ago, which was chop nosed and professionally painted. He wouldn't give me a price, so I'm guessing $1000+.
I'm waiting for the TLT SW1200RS now to see if they got the dimensions correct. Hopefully they will do subsequent runs with different road numbers, as they are only producing one DAR unit: 8134.
Paul: CP never operated straight RS-18's on the DAR, only the upgraded 1800's.

Re: Winter on the DAR
Hi Matt,
There is a file in the MSTS library that contains both, so that's where I'd have to start to get the 18us I'd need to renumber.... but that's a ways in the future, just coming up on Berwick as of now.

Re: Winter on the DAR
Berwick yay! Not a lot of images for Berwick but those we have are quality railyard images on the wiki for that. What we're really lacking is photos from Berwick though to Middleton though. As for Berwick, no winter shots though. Over half the winter shots we have are from Ron Haight. Hardy soul and a stone cold rail nut to be out with a camera all winter long. All we can say is thanks Ron!
