DAR preservation group anyone?

Post by downeastrailfan »

I've been thinking about Samuel's proposal of forming a DAR preservation group, and it might actually be do-able.

The Mantua-Hantsport section might one day be re-opened, but the company has no interest in the Hantsport-New Minas section. Perhaps a DAR preservation could obtain it. WHRC still has the open air car, coach and caboose. In that case, we would only need a locomotive to make a consist. Perhaps some sort of agreement could be worked out to use the MOW equipment and the shop building in Windsor too, at least while the line is shut down.

I think that Bob Schmidt would want market value for the land and scrap value for the steel, etc. But perhaps a donation could be a tax write-off.

I think the bridge or the piers at Avonport require work. Signal lights and cross bucks have been removed, but everything else appears to be in place.

Your thoughts folks. Could this become a reality?

I'm all for it, I was thinking about messaging you to see if you would want to start the paper work to figure out exactly what we would need/do to get the rail line either lease/own it.

I also know when I was in Sydney this past week the CBNS has some old cabooses which aren't being used so maybe we could get one or two of theirs and restore them too for use.

I started this discussion on Yahoo Groups "Atlantic Rails" so anyone who is interested can check the history. There are a few people who want to help. Rail bikes might be the quickest and cheapest way to get people moving on the rails.

I was also thinking about the CBNS cabooses. CN and CP both still have a number of vans on their rosters too.

I've been watching the conversation on Atlantic Rails. Interesting.
