Talk:SS Princess Helene
The article says SS Princess Helene could carry 50 automobiles. Were automobiles actually carried between Saint John and Digby? How were the cars loaded at Digby? Pictures don't show a ramp, nor a suitable crane. Submitted September 15, 2019.
I am not sure where the 50 automobiles comes from but they used two big freight elevators to move cars. The book "Canadian Pacific Fats and Figures" (1937) says two dock elevators were installed in 1931 replacing adjustable ramps which coped with the tide, The elevators improved the unloading of freight on dollies and automobiles which the book says "are carried aboard Princess Helene in large numbers during the tourist season". Before the freight elevators, automobiles had to be hauled up ramps using cables. The elevators are the two boxy structures sticking out of the warehouse roof line.
