A.L. Hardy photograph of the track at Hortonville, N.S. March 17, 1905, with approaching train. "The great snow of 1905" was a particularly severe storm, considered the worst since 1865, and it blocked the track for weeks. The following is a quotation from Mud Creek, the Story of the Town of Wolfville, edited by James D. Davison: "The DAR secured more men, the churches gave pulpit announcements requesting volunteer shovellers, at Mayor DeWitt's request. Though blizzards continued, 250 men cleared the tracks from Grand Pre to Hantsport. Wolfville people and 150 Acadia students and professors completed their portion to Grand Pre, and on the next Sabbath all churches, except the Presbyterians, closed from lack of coal. When working through to Windsor, the students were served preserved horsemeat and hardtack.
