Explorer Guide
Low tide at the old railroad bridge on the Allain River (formerly la rivière Allain) as one approaches Annapolis Royal from the west. Some of the early Acadian dikes were built on the Allain River, and Louis Allain had a water powered gristmill and sawmill. We have a 26-30 ft tide in Annapolis Royal, and at the highest tides of the month the water almost hits the bottom of the railroad bridge. The prominent building to the left of the bridge is the 1837 Annapolis County Courthouse - a National Historic Site. The first court case in Canada using the British System of Common Law Justice was held in Annapolis Royal in 1721.
