Life Story

Ivan Cottnam Smith Jr. from Chester N.S., as indicated on his degree, started at Acadia University in 1948 and graduated on May 20, 1952 with a Bachelor of Science and Certificate of Applied Science (first two years of Engineering). Convocation Program 1952.
Ivan was renowned as the owner of the Nova Scotia's Electronic Attic and associated sites. He was one of the first "netizens" on the web with his "Nova Scotia Stuff" site back in 1996 on Geocities.com. His web sites are still unrefutably the best source of Nova Scotiana on the world wide web. Covering every conceivable subject of historical interest in Nova Scotia ranging from railways and Marconi to very nearly every memorial, historic marker and cenotaph in the province, Ivan was one of Nova Scotia's most avid local historians.

Ivan became too ill to carry on his sites in about 2015, unknown to the community at large. By the time it was noticed that his domains were expiring, an effort to recover and save all the web site files was made. All but one of the 7 domain name sites were recovered and in 2019 they were republished with Ivan's blessing under the domain name http://IS.NSHDPI.ca where they remain until now. The 7th domain name is under reconstruction from files on the Internet Archive, where all his sites are still available in their original form and domain names.
