Dominion Atlantic Railway Boxcars
Box cars made up the majority of the DAR's rolling stock. The DAR began with a fleet of 34 and 36 foot wooden boxcars in several size configurations numbered in the 1200 and 1300 range. Early lettering used an arched style for the road names, later replaced by a straight across road name above the car number and a final version with lines above the road name and below the number. The DAR also acquired a few 36 foot outside braced Folwer boxcars lettered for DAR with 1400 numbers. Some DAR wooden boxcars specially designed for apple service were lettered for DAR but had CPR style numbers in the 69750-69998 range.
From the mid 1930s onward, the DAR fleet of wooden boxcars was gradually replaced by CPR boxcars, both wooden and and later steel. The last DAR revenue boxcar was No. 1329, finally scrapped by 1944. Some DAR-lettered boxcars lived on in maintenance of way service, altered with a variety of specialized doors and windows. While most of the CPR cars that served on the DAR were not officially owned by the line, this category will still identify all the boxcars it can that have been observed on the DAR system.
