NARRATIVE: The M.V. Kipawo at Saint John drydock.
DESCRIPTION: Photographic print of ship at dock with a group of well dressed people waiting to launch the ship.
HISTORY OF USE: The Kipawo, No. 150498:200 gross ton motor vessel 113x26x09 built at East Saint John N.B. and launched December 25th, 1925. Owners Dominion Atlantic Railway. In the spring of 1926, the Kipawo was placed on the Kingsport, Parrsboro, and Wolfville run and she was used as a passenger and cargo boat with a home base in Parrsboro. Captain Edward Terfry, was her first master, and remained in command throughout her Minas Basin service. He named the vessel using the first two letters of her ports of call
(KIngsport/PArrsboro/WOlfville). Crew members were all residents of Parrsboro. She was taken off the Minas Basin Service in 1940 and in 1941 the Kipawo was taken over by the R.C.N. and used as an examination ship at Quebec City. In 1946, she was sold to Crosbie and Company Ltd., ST. Johns, Newfoundland. On July 6, 1982, the 'Kip' was towed back to Nova Scotia by the Coast Guard icebreaker Labrador, and landed in Halifax. Three days later, she was towed to Parrsboro and remains there today.
