Winter on the DAR Gallery

Horton tracks and snow canyon during the famous winter of 1905.

Every winter, the Dominion Atlantic waged the classic Canadian railway battle with snowstorms and drifts. Some storms such as the winter of 1905 became legendary and all winters put the DAR's snow plows to the test during they holiday travel season and the heavy apple shipping season.

Some sections of DAR trackage such as were notorious for massive snow drifts, such as Horton Landing, Grand Pre, and most of the North Mountatin Line to Weston, especially Grafton. The DAR responded with snow fences and planting long lines of windbreak trees provided by the DAR's Kentville Greenhouse.

On the positive side, winter made for many fine railway images of trains and stations outlined in evocative fields of ice and snow as they confronted winter. They still remind of of a railway and its workers that kept going despite old time winter conditions.
