John Collier Jr. (1913-1992) was a notable anthropologist and photographers. He was invited to Nova Scotia by anthropologist Alexander Leighton, whose love for South West Nova Scotia led him to study the lives and landscape of around Digby. Leighton received funding from the Rockefeller Foundation to hire Collier to spend 1950 and 1951 in Digby County extensively documenting the work, families and countryside of Digby County, including numerous trackside shots of the Dominion Atlantic Railway.
