Cyril White Jr. Collection and Scrap Book

Cyril came from a D.A.R. railway family, was a D.A.R. employee like his father and has a deep love of the railway and the way of life that is long forgotten to a new generation of Nova Scotians. He has made a remarkable individual effort to preserve the memory of his father Cyril Sr. and the Dominion Atlantic Railway by dedicating a room right in his business to D.A.R memorabilia. Having also joined the Facebook group DARDPI.CA he started have his wife Penny scan his incredible collection of clippings and memorabilia to share with all. Cyril has given the DARDPI permission as well to display the images from his collection.

Thank you to those who established this D.A.R. site - such an important and significant Railroad History not only locally but also provincially. My father was a D.A.R. locomotive engineer (steam and diesel). I just read Jeff Keddy’s story on the first Dayliner arriving in the Valley. My father was the engineer on that trip and I have the train orders of that trip. He wrote on One Dayliner’s First Trip on the D.A.R- Beginning of a New Era. I have many wonderful memories of visiting the Shops, the Station, the Roundhouse, and sitting in the engineer’s seat of the steam locomotives. I remember the “Callboy” phoning in the middle of the night (a wake up call - time to go to work).

I trained as a Relief Operator (Station Agent). I worked in the following stations - on the Midland Subdivision (Windsor to Truro), Windsor, Brooklyn, Kennetcook, Truro, plus Mainline Subdivision stations, Windsor, Hantsport, Port Williams, Kentville, Berwick, Middleton, Cornwallis, Annapolis Royal, Bear River, and Weymouth.

I could write a memoir on my father working and living as an engineer and on my railroad experience but I am not so inclined as emotions have a way of taking over and this was many years ago. I am thankful I was part of that generation and the entire D.A.R. Family.
