The Discovery Train
The Discovery Train was a special train from the National Museums of Canada with around 20 cars that toured Canada between 1978 and 1980 displaying a timeline of Canadian history from aboriginal inhabitants until present day Canada. Support and funding came from Canadian Pacific Railways, Canadian National Railways, The Royal Bank of Canada, Labatt's Breweries, General Motors of Canada, The Devonian Group, The Great-West Life Assurance Co., The Richard Ivey Foundation, the MacDonald Stewart Foundation and anonymous donations.[1]
15 of the display train cars were purchased at the bargain price of $575,000 US from the American Freedom Train foundation that had conducted a Bi-Centennial tour of the United States with the display cars.[1]
The train was on display in Truro from September 14th until the 16th in 1979,[2] then on to Yarmouth for a 2 day stop, September 19th and 20th, Liverpool for 2 days September 21st and 22nd then on to New Glasgow before leaving Nova Scotia for Newfoundland.
Witnesses[2] report the train being interchanged at Truro with 3 CNR RSC-14s leading and heresay[2] reports the train was delayed because of a minor derailment in Liverpool while continuing its scheduled stops on the tour around western Nova Scotia.
