Is this really Kentville? I don't recognize the treeline or the building.

Yeah, it's Kentville. The same tree was one of several straggley little trees that can be seen growing along the riverbank between the CVR bridge and the riverside cinder piles in 1930s and 40s photos. (See Gary Ness, Volume I, pages 11 and 12.) The little insulbrick shed with a brick chimney also shows up in some of Gary Ness' photos identified as Kentville. I am not sure what the shed was called or its main purpose. This shot shows its west side. It had an open porch on the east side which you can see on page 117 of Gary's new book.
