Presented With Purse of Gold
The Veteran Joe Edwards of the D.A.R. Tenders Thanks to Knights of the C. R. P. [sic]
To the Editor of The Chronicle:
Sir :—Would you kindly allow me through the medium of your columns to tender my most grateful thanks to’ the sixty-four commercial travellers over the D. A. R. system who have presented me with such a well-filled purse of gold; I would like to shake each one of them by the hand, and thank them personally for their most munificent gift. As this is impossible, I beg to say, in the most public manner possible, how much I appreciate their great thoughtfulness.
I regret that the state of my health is the immediate cause of my retiral from active service, I hope, however, that by the blessing of God, I may be spared to spend the evening of my days in that atmosphere of kindly feeling which it has always been my desire to cultivate among my fellow-men.
It will always be a great delight to me to welcome in Annapolis Royal any one of the numerous subscribers to this splendid gift. There is no class of men for whom I have a greater respect than “the knights of the road.” My relationship with them has always been of the most cordial nature, and this most unexpected testimonial from them makes me feel intensely that:
- “Kind hearts are more than coronets
- And simple faith than Norman blood.”
Again thanking them one and all.
I am yours most sincerely,
JOE EDWARDS.
Mr. Edwards has been in the service of the D. A. R. for forty-five years as conductor and in later years as Station Baggage Master at Annapolis Royal and has a host of friends who will wish him all good things in his retirement.
