The book "Canadian Pacific Fats and Figures" (1937) says two dock elevators were installed in 1931 replacing adjustable ramps which coped with the tide, The elevators improved the unloading of freight on dollies and automobiles which the book says "are carried aboard Princess Helene in large numbers during the tourist season". Before the freight elevators, automobiles had to be hauled up ramps using cables. The elevators are the two boxy structures sticking out of the warehouse roof line. I am not sure where the 50 automobiles comes from but they used two big freight elevators to move cars.
