What MOV or Passenger car is in this photo

Post by SamuelMClark »

I was looking at some photos today and I noticed something interesting about the rail car behind engine 2511 while in Truro. It's oddly shaped and I'm thinking it might have been something the railway used. Any idea? Also I've bought the photo so I'll be able to make a better scan of it. Only reason I bought the photo was because of the car.

Hi Samuel,

It's a dynanomiter car, used to test the strength of an engine hauling a loaded train. They used these to establish tonnage ratings for every stretch of track. Most railways had one or more of some variation, or they rented one from their neighbors.
