1027 at unknown location

Three photos of 1027 recently surfaced on ebay. http://dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?title=DAR1027

The second photo in the gallery appears to be Digby. I suspect the other two photos were taken by the same photographer on the same day also at Digby. I'm hoping a local can either confirm or deny my theory.

I went to Google Earth Street View looking for that house in the background of the third shot and never found it in Digby... sure looks like Digby though.

The reason why I said Windsor as it sort of reminds me if I was standing on the line with Halifax on my back and the hill with Fort Edward there on the left, and just some of the curves of the line going to the left sort of remind me of some other older photos of Windsor.

Though it would be nice to find out where some of these photo actually were taken. Do we know who took some of these photos as I've noticed the seller has a bunch that he's been selling lately and getting a VERY good price for them, other than this image that I won, I haven't spent any money on them, don't know who's getting them but I do hope its someone that's going to share.

Although not 100% certain, I'm fairly sure that the first two pictures were taken in Digby. The first one appears to be across from the station, alongside First Avenue. The locomotive is facing east and the background that you see behind it shows the hills where the Pines Hotel is located. I think the second picture is taken right at the switch from the spur that led to the Digby Wharf. I think that the third picture is also Digby, but am not quite as certain as I am with the others. I don't recognize the house in the picture, and I have a feeling that the house may not still exist. The area looks somewhat like the current location of Nova Fuels, located about a mile west of the station on Victoria and Shore Road. If I'm right, the locomotive is again facing east, and this picture was the first of the three taken. However, I hope that you're able to contact the seller and to verify for certain that this is the case.

I don't think the seller would know as all the information that they went on were from what was written on around the edge of the slide and from the image. Guess we'll have to try and find more images to see what we get for comparison. Well I'm going to be scanning slides from Memory Lane on Saturday so maybe I'll find something there to tell us for sure where those photos were taken.

Hi All,

I think the first two shots are Digby but the third may be somewhere else. It can't be at the crossing near Nova Fuels, you can go there on Google Street View and have a look. In the background of the shot there is a white two storey commercial building with a flat roof on the right and several houses on the left. There's nothing like this near Nova Fuels, and if you look around the tracks in Digby, nothing matches. Another thing to keep an eye out for is the crossing the engine is sitting in front of and the switch that's just ahead of the train.

There is one place in Digby that might be close but it's a hard one to prove. If this was a movement down towards the dock there is a foundation of a building in the 1975 aerial view that looks the same general shape of the red building behind the train and to the north of it a large commercial building with a flat roof... but this might be pushing it!

Had a look in Middleton and didn't see anything similar but that's about as far as I got this morning.

I'm fairly sure that I have solved the mystery as to the location of the third picture. It is in Digby, at the corner of Warwick St. and Montague Row. The train had passed the downtown area and had just come through the crossing on Montague Row. I have tried to recreate the picture in the following attachments. The "Digby House 1" photo shows the track location with the house to the side. You can see the crossing at Montague Row in the background. The "Digby House 2" photo shows a clearer view of the house. The "Digby House 3" photo shows the flat roof building across the street from the house. This building was a convenience store in recent years, but I think that it was once a gas station. I'm fairly certain of the locations of the other two pictures, as indicated in my earlier posts, and the three locations are in close proximity in Digby.

Great job, Jim! I was hoping you'd solve this one, as I had a suspicion that the location was Digby.

I do recall the Needs being a gas station many years ago, perhaps an Irving.

Nice Jim. I see the same windows in the same places. Appears they've removed a chimney and changed the siding on the place though doesn't it? I can see why it was so hard to spot it from Google maps. You can't see it from the same angle and the house appears to have changed enough to throw you off:

Jim is right. This is Digby at warwick and montague. The old house was recently a toy makers but has sold. If you have seen the admiral digby museum video, trains pass through here a few times. There are a crew of guys on a speeder heading for this crossing.
All three photos are Digby. For sure.
