Merry Christmas

Post by stem »

I just wanted to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas this year. You've all been a fantastic and enthusiastic group of people to get to know and I truly wish each one of you will enjoy the season with friends and family.

I'll be spending more than a few hours of hoilday time here though uploading hundreds (I hope) of photos so maybe I'll see you on-line!

Sincerely,
Steve Meredith

Re: A DAR Christmas story

Merry Christmas to all and a special thanks to Steve for starting this collaborative effort.
In the season's spirit, I thought I'd share a DAR Christmas story with everyone ...

One mid December afternoon in the early 1950s, the DAR freight on the Weston Subdivision was working the apple warehouses of the North Mountain Line. As they rattled along the aging roadbed through a snowy overgrown pasture somewhere between Somerset and Weston the conductor suddenly told the engineer to stop. He jumped out with an axe and told the train crew to keep going and he'd see them on their way back from Weston. Sure enough, after they'd switched Weston and turned at the wye and headed back, they found him waiting by the track holding a Christmas tree. He explained that he'd spotted the perfect Christmas tree and couldn't pass it up. They tossed the tree in the locomotive tender and the conductor's family enjoyed a perfectly proportioned Christmas tree, albeit slightly garnished with coal dust!

The brakeman on that trip was Leon Barron and he shared this story with me a few years ago.

Cheers,
