Digital Media Sent

Post by SgtBobCdn »

Hi Colin and Steven, I put the envelops in the mail to you today, so by end of week or early next week you should have the packages. There is not a lot of info on some of the photos, but if you have a question please let me know.

My envelope arrived today. Great stuff! Thank you very much for sharing this material.
I love the shot of the locomotive in the Kentville machine shop and the early 1900s shot of the train pulling into Kentville. There is also a very rare shot of the DAR's only 2-6-0 mogul. That is a lovely shot of 999 in the snow at the Angus scrapline. I recognize a number of locations and some equipment and can send you some comments if this is helpful. Who was the photographer? Did these all come from one source?

I would love any comments that you can provide. If you look at IMG_1452.jpg & IMG_1451.jpg they are current photos of 999. When I saw her last year in Delson, they let me go into one of the sheds to see her and she is in really bad repair. I don't think that anyone can bring her back from this. Truely unfortunate....but glad you love the pictures.

Waiting to hear back from the Bytown Railway Society as to access to any DAR material that they might have.

Cheers!

I didn't know the DAR had a Mogul. You learn something new everyday! I hope we get to see the picture.

They inherited the mogul from the Midland, the "Pioneer", No. 28. I put its basic data on the loco list: http://dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?title=DAR0028
Kind of stands out from all those ten wheelers!

Got my CD today Rob (or do you prefer Bob?).

90% stuff I've never seen. NICE!!

You may have mentioned it before, but who was the original collector for any of these items and do you have individual photographer's names for any of these photos?

The first one I have put up either creates a mystery or solves one. 6189 in Truro!
http://dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?title=I ... R6189a.jpg
Reported as SCRAPPED in Kentville in 1939, here it is retired and derelict in Truro a year later obviously waiting transfer to Angus.

Yes or no? What do you all think? Should we correct the wiki info based on this evidence?

I don't know what to make of that Truro shot of 6189. It does contradict Lavallee's fairly precise info that she was scrapped in May 1939. I wonder about the lettering scheme in the photo however. It is the CPR's 1920s style lettering. The Canada Museum of Science and Technology has a 1930s Jenkins photo of 6189 with an Evangeline herald. I wonder if the photo is misdated? Rob, do you know who took the 6189 photo. Great shot in any case of locomotive which did not get a lot of photo attention.

Rob,
One clarification. The photo on your disk labelled DAR 4-6-0 18a is the very rare photo of the DAR's only 2-6-0: No. 28. The National Archives of Canada has a slightly sharper version of the same image in the Andrew Merrilees collection (PA191080) which he identified as No. 28 and if you look very closely by the cylinder you can see there is only one wheel on the pilot truck.
This photo and one in the Stephens Collection at the Canada Museum of Science and Technology (N-18240) are the only photos I have ever seen of this locomotive.

Thanks for the heads up on No. 28. I knew you had mentioned it was in the collection but I wouldn't have noticed it wasn't labelled correctly for quite some time if at all.

Now concerning 6189, it certainly does look a little derelict in this photo by the tilt on the cab yet isn't that the Kentville yard crane No. 3 behind it? From previous photos it appears that the crane boom was usually pointing east and the crane was parked fairly close to the coaling tower, which bears out by the coal on the ground right by the tender. So that being true, isn't this now parked outside of the Kentville turntable by the coaling tower and facing east?

The only thing that seems to contradict this is the amount of weeds in the yard right by the turntable. I'll have to look at some more photos and see if I can spot that many weeds by the coaling tower. Perhaps in this photo it's actually parked further north close to the scrap yard?
