DAR Beta 2.1

Post by Paul Charland »

Hi All,

I've uploaded a new beta for the DAR route I've been working on, it can be found at:

http://www.gigasize.com/get.php?d=9lbp98whqmb

This beta completes the scenery between Coldbrook and Kentville as well as adds about eight miles for unsceniced track between Wolfville and south of Hants Border. Takes about half an hour or so to complete the run from Coldbrook to Hants Border, longer if you stop for a coffee at Kentville.

There are two activities included and a fairly short list of required rolling stock you'll need to download.

Anyone needing help or having any questions, either e-mail me at p.charlie@sympatico.ca or post the question here.

Wow Paul. Thanks a zillion.

I was so busy last week, I just saw this today. Tried to download it but there were pop-ups all over the place and by the time I got past that it told me my download limit for the day was over so I'll try to get it another day.

Why don't you post it here? There will only be a limited amount of people and I'd be happy to see it here.

Hi Steve,

That sounds like and error on Mega's end, to day there have only been two copies downloaded, both by Gerry Baldwin, the first copy was corrupt.

What kind of file size can this site handle, the current beta is just a tad over 140 MB, the next one will only be larger.

I have most of Aldershot drawn, the base at least, will be another week or so before I'll be ready to post another beta.

Here are a couple of Aldershots for you, only two and a half days into it, not too bad:

Wow the base looks great! Those H block barracks are classic army base architecture and the wye looks well laid out. A couple of suggestions - I think there was a tall red checkered water tower in the base somewhere. It would look cool. Having walked this roadbed, there seem to be more of a cutting and steeper hills surrounding the curve leading out of the wye and north from the base.

Hi Dan,

Now that you mention it I'm sure you are right about the water tower. Doesn't show up on the current Google Earth shots so I'm guessing it's gone by now. I'll have to try to find the location and draw a checkered tower.

The station was moved from where I don't know but it's up a bit of a hill from the track elevation on the south leg of the wye. By the time you are just north of the north leg of the wye the track is elevated to almost the height of the roof of the Headquarters building.

I looked for any shots of Aldershot before starting the buildings, could only find shots of the modern buildings, so I did what I thought was reasonable, drew two storey barracks and worked from there. Yesterday morning the first thing I did was find a small shot of 9-11 when hundreds of stranded passengers were housed at the base and what did I find, the barracks were single storey... so, now my barracks are too!

It's 1956 and two brand new S-2s with a load of gypsum cars pass the Scotian Gold plant in Coldbrook enroute to Deep Brook for waiting freighters.

Thanks for the 2.1 beta Paul. I succesfully moved all my activities over to B2.1 from 2.0 and everything works fine so far.

The scenery and industry at the Coldbrook end looks excellent! What is the plant to the east just before the apple plant and what is the warehouse to the west of the apple plant?

I don't know where the original Coldbrook station was but I can't find it on 2.1.

Did you know that all the parked cars have their lights on at night?

I also checked out the track all the way around to what appears to be Hantsport. It all runs fine from one end to the other.

I'll keep running the 2.1 Beta now and retire 2.0 and report any issues I have. Do you want to bundle in 9058 and 9059 hockey mask dayliners with an activity or two on the next release?

One more thing too Paul... can you add in the next time you think of it, station markers for lets say Coldbrook (if you know where the station is), Kentville, Aldershot and Wolfville? Then I can work on some more interesting activities with the Dayliners.

Thanks!

Hi Steve,

The plant north of Scotian Gold is their retail outlet, the "Country Store", the plant just north of Scotian Gold with the siding is "Valley Fertilizer", there's also a larger more modern Valley Fertilizer in Aldershot. To the south of Scotian Gold, served by a siding, is Atlantic Warehouse, there are several along the DAR all the way down to Yarmouth. The DAR station was right across the mainline from this one, long gone by the early '70s time frame I'm working in.

I'll add the station names to the next beta.

Other then trees and adding civilian vehicles, Camp Aldershot is complete. I have Valley Fertilizer in place at what CP called Aldershot, think this would actually be Mill Village or Mill Stream.

Hi Steve,

Plan is to release the next beta then do eight SW1200RSs. Then it might be nice to stop and create an actual Kentville Yard activity and have an RDC for AI traffic.

Was looking at the '73 car movements and Cyanimid of Canada receives six or eight cars a month and ships out a car or two as well. (CP consists had it spelled Cyanimid but it's actually Cyanamid with two "a"s).

That's something along the idea I had. I was thinking to create a single time slice in which there was switching going on in the yard for the Steam Mills spur and to have the Dayliner come though and stop at Kentville (maybe even for lunch!).

Then we would create an activity for both running the switcher and the other for running the Dayliner. We could get really ambitious after and have a third AI switcher on the south side of the yard working away doing little chores.

Glad to see we're on the same wavelength never the less!

Did you see that I mention I have both 9058 and 9059 in the hockey mask done?

I'm still frittering away with the war paint ones yet for my own use but they wouldn't be useful on a 70's era line anyway so I haven’t been pushing it.

I've had my hands full scanning all these track diagrams that Ken sent me. I also am having my fair share of fun trying to get these diagrams into JPEG 2000 format and then to have them served up on the web site on top of it is a major challenge that I haven't found the answer to yet even after a week of research.

But still I have time to occasionally run from Coldbrook to Hantsport!

Hi Steve,

You wouldn't happen to have a scan of Wolfville? I have the track chart but it's pretty hard to read, thought there was going to be a map with the tracks shown as well. My current Wolfville needs reworking and there isn't enough good photos out there to actually see what I need to do. There is a great aerial view from 1977 but half the tracks are in shadow.
