aerial views

Post by thomasreyno »

Hello. Im interested in any aerial views (pics or mapping) of windsor, n.s. Even with the web at my fingertips, the track layout in windsor, with the small midland yard, are hard to find. Any tips or leads someone could give to help with this search ?
I've tried everything but museum visits in Windsor seems to be the only option left. Thanks for any help.

Hi Thomas,

I am not sure where your homebase is but you can find a great selection of air photos of Windsor and other locations from the 1930s to the present day at the following places:

The Nova Scotia Lands and Forests library in Halifax, 1701 Hollis Street, the Founders Square Building.

And probably at the Natural Resources office in Windsor: Phone: (902) 798-2016 / 798-2796
e-mail: Windsor_office@gov.ns.ca

There is also the National Air Photo library in Ottawa which has holdings for the entire country including Windsor.

Hope this helps. I have spent many happy hours looking at air photos to solve various historical mysteries. You can often use stereoscopic glasses to make 1930s and 40s buildings pop out in 3-D.

Hi Thomas,

I used Google Earth, it's pretty clear as it is but a little dark, if you scroll back a couple of years the aerials are lit much better.

I also used the photos in the wiki here for clarity:

Thanks for the ideas. Ive checked the aerial photos website and cant seem to navigate it successfully. I will continue to try. The wiki does have a few good shots of the layout but I just wanted a clear layout picture from above for track layout for an HO setup.

I agree with you though. We never have run across a decent railyard drawing like was found for Kentville and Yarmouth.

I'd love to have one for both Windsor and Digby.

Best you can do is put it together with some old topographical maps like:
http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... 6_East.jpg

and then fill in the detail with photos:
http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... r_Railyard

If you need a high res version of the topographical, send me your email in a private message and I'll get that out to you.

I've got a HO anyrails version of Windsor mixed between WHRC and when it was still DAR after the causeway was built.
