D10s ever in Tuscan?

Post by Dan Conlin »

What do people think? Did any of the D10s or Pacifics that started arriving on the DAR in the late 1930s ever get the Tuscan red paint treatment seen on the D6s and 4-4-0s? Or did the DAR just go with black? It is so hard to read those black and white photos. I am working away on a MDC/Roundhouse 4-6-0 that will be No. 999 and I just was given a beautiful (but non-running) brass D10 that I hope to ressurect as No. 1018. I am tempted to go with red for 999 but not sure about 1018.

Short answer - yes, both a few D-10s and Pacifics received the Tuscan paint scheme.

D-10s : 999, 1018, 1041 & 1090
G-2s: 2511 & 2552

As far as I know these were the only ones that received the Tuscan treatment, but there could be others. In photo, look for striping around cab number, domes, cylinders and tender sides, also brass name plates (if still on), silver smoke box fronts, white painted driver tires.

Thanks Jim for the info. Do you have any known dates for them in Tuscan? I found these photos that I think are in Tuscan. Can you confirm?

I'm pretty sure that 2511 is in Tuscan: http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... -B0048.jpg

Again, I'm pretty sure that 1018 is in Tuscan here: http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... R1018a.jpg

And I'm pretty sure that 1090 is in Tuscan here too: http://www.dardpi.ca/wiki/index.php?tit ... _aa_cs.jpg
