Mystery Apple Warehouse - Annapolis Royal?

Post by Dan Conlin »

I saw this original photograph hanging at a Bed and Breakfast in Annapolis Royal. It has some nice construction details. Does anyone recognize the building or location?

Morning Dan,

Just drew this building the other day! It's on the north side of St Anthony Street between Church and Drury. It's called St Anthony Place now, been modified, but it's still there:

The stones are where the DAR spur went down to the wharf, and there was a siding into the building. Haven't figured out who owned it back in the '70s yet, but there were no fruit companies shipping anything out of Annapolis Royal by then.

Wow. Good eye. Thanks. Have you seen these air views from 1958 - a bit closer to your time period:

Hi Dan,

Been using this aerial shot more and more, still has the tracks and freight shed, so I think that would make it late seventies or very ear;y eighties.

http://lanoue.free.fr/AnnapolisRoyal.jpg

There is a versicle tank out in the middle of a field behind Annapolis Woodworking that has a driveway up to it but doesn't show up on other photos. Not sure what it is... a municipal water tank maybe?

If you look just to the right of the fold in the center of the page you can see your fruit warehouse, white walls with a gray roof. Just north (west really) across the tracks you can see the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission outlet, the Irving Oil dealer, and Annapolis Woodworkers, think the brown "L" shaped building now part of the Home Hardware.

The building is 190 St Anthony St, and is in the 1974 phone book as the Annapolis Royal Co-op.

It's not here but interestingly Drury Street used to be Railroad Street:

but it is here and perhaps the warehouse too:

Was that any help you guys?

Hi Steve,

The second shot is pretty interesting. You can see the fruit warehouse that Dan was asking about bot across the tracks is a seriously large warehouse or factory of some type. You can also get a look at the old enginehouse north of them.

Where do you think this is? Somerset? Weston? North mountain line somewhere? Bear River?

Hi Steve,

If you're asking me about the second photo, it's metro Annapolis Royal!

I meant the warehouse alright.

But the building you're talking about is the one I found on the mcCulley aerials. There is a large building/warehouse on the other side of the tracks from it but it can't be the same because there's no hill behind it. At least as far as I can see.

Hi Steve,

Can't get to the shot anymore, keep getting a 500 error.

For some reason I had to manually add the ?ID=24 to the link to get it to work:

http://www.novascotia.ca/nsarm/virtual/ ... .asp?ID=24

If this is the McCully shot you are referring to, it is Annapolis Royal. To the extreme right you can see the town hall abd one point of the berm around Fort Anne. The engine house is along the original yard of the Windsor and Annapolis Railway, would appear this was taken even before the wye was laid and probably before the line went south to Digby and beyond.

Yepper. That's the shot.

So where do you think the warehouse might be? You've been up and down the line in high detail.

An enjoyable conversation ...
I think the very large structure beside the apple warehouse in the air photo is a hockey rink. It has a similar look to the old Kentville rink also visible in the 1931 air views of Kentville.
St. Anthony St does climb a bit behind the warehouse towards Fort Anne. Perhaps that accounts for the hill effect in the construction shot.

The Annapolis Royal wye is just out of frame. You can see it in the next shot it the sequence along with the Annapolis Royal freight shed, oil and water tanks: http://www.novascotia.ca/nsarm/virtual/ ... .asp?ID=23

Yup. There it is. Did you see the old Frogmore station just to right of the engine house?

That definitely looks like it could be a rink with the low roof. Good eye.

I thought myself the same thought regarding the warehouse being on the southside of the tracks where the land rose a bit but it looks a lot more heavily treed than I imagined Annapolis to be. I think Annapolis Royal was a prairie like the surrounding area and all the tree have been planted whereas the picture looks like a natural stand, especially on the left side, of all deciduous trees. I don't see any evergreens.

Thoughts?

Could this be on the westbound line (towards Bear River) after leaving the wye? Maybe around where they built the new station or in the St George street overpass area? Those tracks are just freshly laid which makes me think this is a possibility. I just couldn't find any photos of that area that showed that house in the background and overlooking the railway tracks.

I see the wye now, must be getting older and it takes me longer to see things!

Think Kentville's arena was built around 1867, remember reading somewhere it was called the "Centennial Arena". The large building in this photo was on the site where the current NSLC outlet is located.
