D.A.R. Uniforms

Post by stem »

I would like to know if anyone has any knowledge or recollection of where that knowledge might be found concerning the uniforms of the railway. Not only is it interesting and missing from this wiki but it would help in many cases narrow the date range of photos.

I had the chance to buy a conductor's uniform a few years ago for $40, and I passed it up! It had multimarks on the buttons, so it was probably from the 1969-1980 period and used on the Dayliners.

Memory Lane has a few uniforms. Andrew Blackburn has a few conductors caps.

Hello,
The hats I have are DAR Conductor, and DAR Trainman. They have the gold thread shaped into the lettering and the same except silver thread for Trainman. The conductors hat is dated 1940.This style was very CPR.I remember the conductor on the RDC in Halifax in 1979 was still wearing the CPR version of hat but by this time they would be using the multimark.
There were large gold buttons and silver buttons on the earlier uniforms. I have one DAR conductors hat badge made to look gold,I would guess it was from the 1920's or earlier.
There was also a DAR Captain's hat badge made with the gold thread and other colors with the older DAR crest with fish and thistle.

Hello

There is a photograph of a DAR train crew in uniform in W.W. Clarke's c1925 History of Early Nova Scotia Railways. From memory, I think the image was c1900 and their costumes were not that much different than other trainmen of the period; Middleton has a copy of the book.

DAR brass uniform buttons I have seem, displayed the interlocking script letters "DAR".

You can see the late Harry Taylor years later in this photo with his CP style cap.

Thanks as always to Jim taylor for sharing these family photos.

This uniform appears to be different. Is this an early CP issue?
