Interchange at Truro

Post by chrismears »

Hello. I am slowly working my way through drawing a map of the railway in AutoCAD based on the aerial photos and maps of the line found here in the Wiki. While drawing the yard at Truro based on the 1976 Aerial photo I found myself tracing the line out to the CN yard and wondering how interchange between the railways was managed.

Were CN cars destined for the DAR, or vice versa, be exchanged at the DAR yard or the main CN yard?

Just curious. Thanks.

Chris

Cars were exchanged on the stretch of DAR track behind the Community College. One ry. would drop their cars on that piece of track and the other would pick them up later. This started when the DAR dieselized in April 1959. Previous to that all DAR trains used the CN facilities - station, yard and roundhouse.

I've got some maps of the Truro interchange that I haven't posted to the wiki yet. I'll get them on over the Christmas holidays when I get home. Look for them after Boxing day.

With any luck I'll be moving along too on tracing what I can find here in the Wiki into AutoCAD. You're welcome to it when it's done. Thanks

I would have never figured that out on my own. The longer I looked at that map the more convinced that any interchange traffic being exchanged at Truro would require a train from the DAR yard to travel over to the larger (IIRC) CN yard where the cars could be exchanged. From a modellers perspective the above-noted arrangement would work much better.

Neat. Thanks

Enjoyed your blog Chris. Like the image from Library and Archives Canada on your DAR entry:

I love that big store across the Street from the station - P.R. Ritcey's I think - wish had room for it on my layout - make a great model. It even had its own spur and loading dock.

I looked briefly with the little time I had a home during Christmas but I didn't locate the maps.

Next time I'm home though, I'll tear the place apart and try to find them for you. I want to get them up on the wiki anyway!
