Steam Mill train station pictures

Post by Geof Turner »

Hi,

I'm a new member. Does anyone have a picture of the Steam Mill Village train station?

It was part of the Cornwallis Valley section that went from Kentville to Kingsport.

Ed Coleman remembered seeing one with Leon Barron and they had commented that the Steam Mill sign was too big , in comparison to the size of the station.

However, after cataloging Leon's collection, there doesn't seem to be a picture of the station.

Thanks,

Geof

Welcome the DAR DPI Geof! Hope you meet some of the great people here and end up part of the discussions here.

Sooner or later Dan will wander by and see this and as he's our biggest CVR fan around here, he will probably be able to add something. Jim O'Donnel often comes up with some awesome stuff too so perhaps once he tunes into this post he may have something to add.

I myself have never seen such a photo and it is surprising that Leo wouldn't have had one of these in his collection.

It also sounds like you might have access to Leo's collection of photos?

Out of interest, have you seen the stations we do have?

I have never seen a picture of the Steam Mill station. All I know is that it was listed in most timetables at Mile 2.68 or 2.7 as a flag stop station with no operator. I don't think it was ever a big affair as there was a full station at Aldershot just a mile away.
Early on there may have been a small station/shelter - perhaps similar to the Bloomfield Station.
I have wondered about the shed beside Mr. Morine's house (the relocated Aldershot station) in Steam Mill. It has a railway look with a hip roof and could have been a station shelter or maybe a section house.

I recently found an accident report from an train-car collision at Pereau near Kingsport in 1935. It describes a "shelter station". This may be similar to the Steam Mill Station. Has anyone seen a photo of a DAR "shelter station?"

As far as I know steam Mill had a train station but it was small so maybe one would consider it a shelter. It would have had one before camp Aldershot had one , the camp didn't arrive in this area until 1904 and the railway line , i believe, was in steam mill in the 1890s.

I had talked to Ed Coleman , a local historian, and he told me he had looked at a picture of the station with Leon Barron and they had laughed at it because the sign that said Steam Mill was too big in comparison to the structure.

Leon's collection is now owned by yhe Kings County Museum and it has been catalogued and the picture doesn't seem to be there.

My father , who lived here since the 1920s thought the station was moved onto Reid road and used as a shed( this also makes one wonder about the size of it.)Apparently, that building has been torn done.

I talked to the guy who lives in what is left of the Camp Aldershot station, now located on the corner of HWY 359 and North Aldershot road, and there is a building there that looks like a railway building but he doesn't know anything about it.

Would be cool to see a picture of it as it stands today if you swing by one day!

Sounds like the Steam Mill shelter might have been a Shelter No. 2 like H-15-2 if it was that small and ended up being used as a shed. The other ones probably weren't practical for winter service.

how do I attach a photo?

If you give me an email address I can send them and then maybe someone would post them for me.I am not the most technical person.

I'm not sure what you use for email but if you click on the "@" under my pciture in the left hand box, it will launch your mail program and put my address in it.

Try that first! If that doesn't work let me know and we'll figure out another way.
