Why do YOU like the DAR?

Post by downeastrailfan »

The DAR was where I first started watching trains. Having been born in 1980, I am old enough to remember the end of another era in Canadian railroading. I saw mostly RDCs in Weymouth and Saulnierville Station, but did catch a few freights, an MOW train, a Sperry car and the track gang. I saw Santa Fe boxcars in Yarmouth too. They brought in raw cotton for the mill. I'll never forget the sound of those RDC horns echoing back at night! I was hooked!

Between 1990 and 1994, I saw moving gypsum trains. I always missed the freights. I began taking photos in 1991, but wish I could have taken them earlier.

My interest in the DAR started back in 1956 when I was 5 years old, although at that age all I knew was that the train was sitting at the wharf in Digby when I got off of the ferry Princess Helene after crossing the Bay of Fundy. With relatives in Deep Brook and in and around Truro at that time, the DAR was the first railway I saw in action and the memories have never left me.
