Freights west of Kentville
While in the "Land of Evangeline" over the holidays, I visited Ron Haight and scanned a number of his prints. I wanted to get freights west of Kentville, because I felt its something of which we could use more. Most are in the 1988 and '89 period and were taken in Bloomfield. I also got some info on car destinations. I plan to get them on line over the next few days.

Hi Matt,
Can't find a Bloomfield in the 1973 employee timetable, could this be one of those places that CP named something differently then the community name?

Hi Matt,
I see, it's about half way between Acaciaville and North Range in a '70s timetable.

Great shots Matthew! Nice to see shots from that end of the valley in the time period I remember - but never photographed. I take it in that distillery shot that the tank was being removed? Was that after the distillery shut down?

Hi Dan,
Yes, the tanks had been removed and were being shipped away after the distillery was shut down. Too bad, they look like nice stainless steel tanks that could have been used locally.

Re: Freights west of Kentville
Hi Matt:
Thanks for posting the pictures from Bloomfield. Having spent a lot of time during my childhood with my grandparents in Digby, the western end of the Province is more the focus in my interest in the D.A.R.
It was stated in the write-up for Ron Haight that he produced a two hour video on the last few weeks of passenger service in the Valley. I remember you mentioning a while back that he had done a video, but that he was working on getting this edited. I'm wondering if this is now available, as I'd love to buy a copy of it.
Thanks.

Re: Freights west of Kentville
Hi Jim and Paul,
Ron originally released the two hour video back around 1990 or '91. He wanted to re-edit it using his seven hours of raw footage. I asked him about it on my most recent visit. He has had some health problems so the project is on the back burner.
I've been uploading tons of photos Paul. Take a look in the "Recent Changes" in the wiki. The majority are at Bloomfield on the Yarmouth Sub., but some are elsewhere.
I'm really happy to have had access to Ron's collection of photos documenting the last years of freight trains on the western end of the DAR. I've been told these trains were hard to shoot because they ran as extras. I was too young to chase trains back then, just watch 'em go by:-)

I dug up a mileage for Bloomfield - 28.1. That is a cute little flagstop station photo that you've posted Matt. Hmmm, it'd make a nice garden shed replica!

Re: Freights west of Kentville
I've added a photo category for Ron so all should be able to see his contributions that Matt has been uploading.

By the way Matt.. any chance that the photos could be bumped up to 1500 x ?? for a little more clarity? I was finding it hard to see some numbers on quite a few of the photos so that's why I'm asking.

I scanned the photos at Ron's house, so I don't have access to the prints. I also noticed that the numbers are difficult to read. When I scan the next batch, I'll make them bigger.

DAR videos
If Ron Haight is not feeling well enough to re-edit his 7 hours of footage, why, I could do it..
I'm out of work right now after my contract with the last TV station ended back in September (APTN field camera/editor). I'm still looking for another position in my television/radio field.
Last fall I bought a copy of a good quality video editing software to use on my laptop, along with a 1TB external drive. I haven't had any footage to try it out on as of yet. If you could find some way to get the footage to me, provided Ron has no objections, I'd be very happy and honoured to splice it together just for the fun of it -and to pass some time until I can kick-start my career again!..
That being said, does anyone know what Garnet Clarke is doing with all his footage? The only video I ever got from him was the last freight west of Coldbrook (to Middleton). He planned on getting a community college student to put it together for him, but I don't think he ever did. I'd like to help him with editing and DVD creation, too..
Maybe we could collect all the footage that's kicking around the Valley and put it together on a DVD as a fundraiser for the Middleton Railway Museum...
