Trackside battery box? (Near Little Brook Station)

Post by RedLink27 »

Years ago, when I was maybe 7 or 8, I'd walk down the abandoned rail line with my grandad every now and then. While walking somewhere between Saulnierville Station and Little Brook Station, we came across a trackside box made of concrete and steel. My grandfather told me it was for batteries used on the trains. I opened the lid, found that the box was full of snakes, and left it. Anyway, fast forward a decade, and I finally found it again. This time, no snakes! Plenty of spiders, though.
Can anyone confirm what exactly it is? It certainly was for batteries, as there are old parts lying around it that clearly read 'BATTERY'.. Just what were these batteries for? Cabooses? The RDC's? A signal? Any info is appreciated.
EDIT: So I found out that this was for a signal. Mystery solved. Anyway, enjoy the pics

Neat find.

I suspect it was for a level crossing signal. Perhaps a battery backup in case of power failure.
