DAR6227 Photos
Do my eyes deceive me but do we not have 3 different photos in sequence here?
Interesting we also have 3 different dates and 3 different photographers but one person did them all. Check the position of the siderods are all in the exact same place and the fron wheel is exactly at the same distance from the fishplate.
Cool.

These two

appear to be the same to me, just one is a closer shot and the third is a different photo but at the same location (Engineer climbing onto or off the Steam Engine).

Zoom in on the number plate on the nose and check the alignment of the handrail with the buildings in the background and see if you see what I see.

Re: DAR6227 Photos
The three shots may have been taken by three railfans standing side by each (a pair of toast and a Pepsi). If you take a close look there is a branch of a tree to the left of the engine that in the first shot lines up with the front handrail. The second shot it's a little different, and the third there's a noticeable gap. This could have been taken by one person but the exposure is different for all three. When I was taking a lot of photos I'd adjust my exposure once to take shots in an area, not three times to take three shots in a fairly short period of time.
Dates... well not sure about that, maybe none of the photographers took accurate notes or none at all and just guessed when they were in Kentville last. I scanned about 800 photographs for the Smiths Falls Railway Museum, had several duplicates that the person had bought from different dealers, and several of them had different dates although they were the same shots, who knows why. If you look the date March 30th appears to be reasonable, there is no snow on the ground but no leaves on the trees... spring?

Funny Paul!
But the exposure of course is just people with different monitors adjusting gamma or the like to what they think is the best looking shot. Even more likely it was the difference in developing the prints in the tray. Black and white print development was pretty well a matter of taste just like digital gamma. You see the first one is the least processed and possibly under exposed in the tray so the contrast is high leaving little detail to the running gear. Other's have boosted the cook time in the tray or the gamma to highlight detail but I doubt that was the original exposure without a massive flash.
The second print is probably a copied negative judging by the tail of the tender being out of focus. Someone didn't make good contact while copying the negative somewhere along the line.
The third print is just awful with a light streaked sky and bleached out details all over the place.
The way I see it, the photographer started at print number one and was progressing to the right with subsequent shots to try and get more side detail. He got a great shot with the fellow climbing in (or is it out?) of the cab.

Re: DAR6227 Photos
I think the photographer took a series of shots within moments of each other. See p. 12 of Gary Ness' v. 1 book. The photo in the book has steam being released under the front pilot. Credit is James Walder collection, which isn't very helpful in identifying the photographer.

We were given a box to try by the neighbors... now I'm sure they didn't like us!
