A Locomotive for the Museum?

Post by stem »

I know that a few years back the museum thought they were going to get the locomotive that is at Upper Clements park. To my knowledge, that it a CNR locomotive.

I was just looking through my Constructed in Kingston book and updating some locos on the Wiki when I realized that there are 2 possible candidates that could be renumbered to substitute for D.A.R. locomotives.

CPR Nos. 1095 & 1098 were built on the same sales contract C-501 as DAR units 1089, 1090, 1092 and 1111.

You can see 1095 here:

Hi Steve,

If it were my choice, I would like to see 999 return to its roots. Delson has more than enough equipment, so I think they could afford to part with it. Unfortunately, moving a steam engine (or any rail equipment) is an expensive proposition, and the Memory Lane Museum appears to operate on a shoe-string budget. The only way this is likely to happen is by community fund raising, or through a donation. So if I ever win the 6/49, there may be a steam loco or an RDC in front of the museum.

The Upper Clements locomotive is a CN locomotive, originally Canadian Northern 1274 built by Montreal Locomotive Works in 1905 and later as Canadian National 1521.

I dream about 999 returning to Nova Scotia as well - it would have looked so splendid in a restored Kentville roundhouse! However a cautionary note about locomotive preservation: even beyond the cost of transporting it, there is the long term maintenance cost of outdoor display which requires a very sound long term plan with a stable revenue soure. Otherwise you are left with a deteriorating burden after the initial enthusiasm. Not to be negative but many museums have fallen into this trap.

Hi Steve,

The city on Kingston just announced they budgeted money to paint 1095 and as it was built in Kingston I'd think they have no intention of removing it from it's present location. 999 in Delson would be a better choice but good luck, they don't cooperate with any other CRHA organization in the country from what I've been told.

I hear you. All good comments and all very true. However, this is like a pipe dream topic so let's have some more fun yet.

How about we get dibs on the CNR equipment from Upper Clements and then talk to the folks at the Musquodoboit museum (a CNR station) and swap the CNR equipment for the DAR & CPR equipment they have there?

Here's the equipment they have and why:

I don't know anything about the caboose.

Here's some links about the museum and equipment:

Hi Steve,

OK, it may be a pipe dream but what's the worst that could happen, asking about the equipment and having someone say no? (How's that for keeping the dream alive!)

I agree with Dan. He makes a good point about upkeep costs of equipment. To ensure long-term preservation, the equipment should be covered, or put in a building.

The thought crossed my mind of the Nova Scotia Museum of Industry acquiring 999. However, they have a CN 0-6-0 and S&L 2-6-0 (#42), both in storage. So, they probably don't have the funds to make it happen.

An RDC is ideal, because its stainless steel, and most of it will last outdoors forever. Plus, part of the car could be used for displays.
