That book sounds interesting, Steve.

A few months ago, I began compiling a list of all the books and magazines with DAR content in my collection or that I could think of, but that project fizzled out as the weather got nicer! I'll get back to it in the Fall.

In the meantime, have a look at this publisher's list: http://www.nimbus.ns.ca/Default.aspx?ta ... goryid=197
Almost all of the books in the "Images of our Past" series have a transportation section, with a photo on each page, and a caption underneath. Your local library can get any book through interlibrary loan that is not in their collection.

1936 History of the Dominion Atlantic Railway by Marguerite Woodworth

Is now listed on eBay.ca as #180276179805 as "buy it now" . At $60.00, it is in the upper price range ...I have seen $35.00 to $75.00 ...but is said to be in good condition. A copy seems to be offered once each two/three years...they are not making anymore!

I know the focus here is preservation of images, but to appreciate the early history of the WAR, the WCR/YAR, their merger as the DAR and the golden period up CPR takeover, this is required reading. Mind you, Woodworth was a DAR employee at the time of writing and the DAR was the Publisher, so there is nothing negative about the CPR take-over.. but she had full access all the company records which makes for some great detail.

Good Luck.

Thanks Fred. Interesting how 25 years ago I found this book through an interlibrary exchange. This was of course at the dawn of personal computers, before public access of the internet and the WWW so I photocopied it! One of these days when it comes available at a reasonable cost ($35 I agree is much better than $60.00) I shall purchase it!

Ed Coleman, a columnist for the Kentville newspaper, writes a weekly general-interest history column. He often has DAR related subjects. Go to www.novanewsnow.com and scroll down the main page to the list of columnists and click on Ed Coleman;all his recent articles will come up. If you have time, they can all be interesting, but you might be interested in:

"Money and Men of the Old Railway" with excerpts from History of Early Nova Scotia Railways, by retired DAR Conductor Clarke c1925.

"Railway Lore- Oddities on the Line" which, if I remember, is about the changes to the proposed route of the CVR, later DAR's Kingsport branch.

By the style of the writing I think Ed also authored the Kingsport article Steve referred to in his post of October 16 last.

Faith Stevens has an interesting letter to the editor, found at the www.novanewsnow.com site. On the main page enter...Can't we Save the Old Lawrencetown Train Station?....in the search box, in the upper right-hand corner.

I was not aware the building still existed. Has anyone a photograph to share?
